Elizabeth is an experienced partner and is head of Wealth Structuring and Inheritance Planning. Elizabeth has been qualified for longer than she cares to admit and has been with Trethowans since being brought down from London in 2001 from a national firm to head up the Private Client Team.

Elizabeth's particular expertise is in the area of tax mitigation (saving) and her aim is to deprive the Chancellor of the Exchequer of as much of her clients money as is legal.

Elizabeth is a member of The Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners which is the "gold standard" for lawyers in this field.

In pursuit of her aim Elizabeth prepares Wills, Trusts, Letters of tax advice, and tax calculations. Elizabeth also has many years of experience of dealing with the particular taxation issues for those with assets overseas, both for UK citizens and those of other nationalities.

Elizabeth has developed an additional area of expertise concerning Care Home funding and advises on the various types of funding available with a view to saving the family inheritance from being swallowed up in Home Care fees. In tandem with this Elizabeth is very experienced in helping to arrange the affairs of those who lack mental capacity and she understands all the tensions that having a family member without capacity can cause.

Examples of how Elizabeth has helped clients include:

  • Elizabeth in one case assisted a client on the sale of his business for several million pounds with the setting up of a number of trusts and other tax efficient financial arrangements to preserve enough of the sale proceeds for himself while passing on as much as he could to the family without immediate tax liability.
  • In another case Elizabeth assisted a client to be reimbursed 6 years worth of Nursing Home fees from the local Primary Care Trust by proving that the person in the Home qualified for funding from the NHS, which prior to Elizabeth's involvement the PCT had successfully resisted.
  • Elizabeth has been described by her clients as "pro-active and creative" and as having a "can-do attitude".

Away from the office ...

Elizabeth is involved in a number of charities as a Trustee and is the Treasurer of several local organisations which she finds personally very rewarding. Elizabeth is also used by her husband as his unpaid assistant in the garden, which she finds less rewarding.
