TRETHOWANS SOLICITORS

Trethowans and the Environment

Trethowans has an ongoing commitment to reduce its impact on the environment. The firm works hard in continuing the main aim of our environmental policy which is to reduce waste and energy consumption.

Here are some examples of what we are doing.

Reducing travel through a number of initiatives:

  • Use of video conferencing facilities between our offices
  • Use of telephone conferencing with our clients when appropriate
  • Encourage staff who wish to cycle to work (e.g. cycle racks and changing and showering facilities at our new Salisbury office)
  • Provision of a company vehicle which staff may use for work purposes and sharing transportation between offices and the town centre - in order to minimise the number of vehicles being used for the same journey
  • A number of staff lift share for their journeys to and from work.

Reducing our energy consumption through:

  • Investment in new IT equipment with lower energy consumption
  • Use of energy saving devices in our offices
  • Switching off devices/equipment not in use - some manually, some automatically

Reducing our paper consumption through:

  • Printers and photocopiers automatically default to duplex (double-sided) printing to reduce the amount of paper used
  • Encouraging staff and clients to think about whether they need to print e-mails (by way of a logo on each e-mail)
  • Increased use of e-mail communication by staff (reduces paper and postage/transport costs)
  • Marketing communications are increasingly sent by email
  • Use of online books and legal research websites where appropriate
  • Use of recycled paper in the office, our standard paper is ISO 14001 accredited
  • The paper we use for our business cards is "fsc" certified

Recycling

  • Confidential paper waste is shredded and recycled
  • Non-confidential paper and cardboard waste is recycled
  • Staff are provided with extra recycling waste bins in order to separate confidential paper waste, non-confidential paper and cardboard waste and non-recyclable waste
  • Recycling of toner cartridges and containers
  • Use of drinking glasses rather than disposable cups
  • Use of sustainable source inks for marketing communications

The Salisbury Office

  • Built in 2008 our office in Salisbury conformed to rigorous planning and building regulations for insulation and energy efficiency
  • Glass is used to maximise natural light
  • Inside lighting has movement sensors to automatically switch on and off depending on staff movement
  • Carpets are made from recycled materials
  • Approximately 80% of the furniture is recyclable

We are constantly looking for new ways to progress our commitment to the environment and work with our staff and clients to make further improvements in this area.
