Liquor Licensing

The Smoking Ban has affected leisure clients, not only with customers being unable to smoke inside, but it is also starting to have a knock on effect with matters relating to noise and pollution affecting nearby residents. This may lead to enforcement action by Local Authorities and potential reviews of Premises Licences.

Partner Jane Walker is a specialist and well regarded licensing lawyer. She has advised on liquor licensing law for over 12 years to ensure that clients in the leisure and retail sectors operate legally with the correct licences. She also advises on Regulatory Compliance and has defended prosecutions for underage sales.

In order to sell alcohol legally licensees need to apply for a Premises Licence and a Personal Licence. Personal Licence Applicants are also required to sit the National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH) examination before they obtain a Licence.

We regularly act for independent, regional and national organisations across all market areas, including: Pub Companies, Restaurant Chains, Supermarket Chains, Convenience Stores and other Independent Operators in the Leisure and Retail Sectors.

We are able to advise other organisations that require licences to comply with the new legislation such as leisure centres, coffee houses, concession stands, private clubs / societies. A Premises Licence is required for the sale of alcohol, the provision of regulated entertainment; late night entertainment, live music and theatre etc. We are also able to assist operators in the hospitality and retail sectors to ensure that they comply with the relevant aspects of food safety legislation.

Workshops can be arranged for updates on the Licensing Act 2003. This would be especially relevant for those who obtained Personal Licences by “grandfather rights” and who may not be fully aware of all the implications of the new Act.

Our team is used to handling substantial volumes of licensing work. We pride ourselves on liaising closely with line management and administration staff within our clients’ organisations to ensure that their needs are fully met. Our service delivery combines superior legal skills and procedural knowledge with a friendly and approachable style, which is second to none.
