The first Monday in February is the worst day in the year for employee absences, it has been revealed.
It is thought that up to 350,000 workers will have called in work with excuses this past Monday, on what has been dubbed "National Sickie Day".
The absence of so many workers on a single day could cost the industry more than £30million.
However, the results of a recent study show that bosses are becoming "too soft" with their employees, accepting emails and text messages as proof of sickness rather than the traditional phone call.
More than a quarter of British companies trust their employees regarding illness without speaking to them. Furthermore, around half of the 1500 managers surveyed in the study said they did not believe their workers’ excuses for days off.
