Family & Relationships

Footprints in the sandThe Family Team at Trethowans, headed up by partner Andrew Mercer provide assistance and representation in all aspects of family related matters. These include pre nuptial, cohabitation and parental responsibility agreements; marriage and separation, cohabitation or civil partnership breakdown. We also assist with the issues of financial provision, arrangements for children and domestic violence.

Andrew Mercer explains, "At the outset of a relationship or with the contemplation of marriage or cohabitation, it is sensible to obtain advice on your legal obligations and responsibilities. The breakdown of a relationship can be a very emotional and worrying time and it is important to ensure that appropriate legal advice is obtained from the outset on your position, be it in relation to children or finances."

For many, the breakdown of a marriage can be seen as a journey. Initially there are the concerns and anxieties that come with a world that has been turned upside down. It is the solicitors role to accompany those on this journey and to see them into their brave new world. The process can take anything from six months to two years to complete. Over this time you will have a lot of dealings with your solicitor and it is important therefore that you are satisfied from the outset that the solicitor you instruct is one that you have confidence in and a rapport with.

Andrew continues, "We offer all new clients an initial free half hour interview.  This is all about the client getting to meet us and deciding whether they get on well enough with us to entrust us with their personal matters. "

We pride ourselves on dealing with all family matters sympathetically and act in the client's best interest in order to bring about a negotiated solution.

Andrew concludes, "I am proud of the fact that my team offers clear advice that does not shy away from making those difficult decisions and from the outset we will give our clients clear guidance and set realistic expectations. All members of the team are passionate about their chosen discipline; they are approachable and very down to earth."
