A family owned business received a dawn raid by UKBA enforcement officers who imposed fines totalling £22,000.
It immediately became pretty obvious that the directors had only a nodding acquaintance with both the Immigration Rules and the National Minimum Wage Regulations so an HMRC inspection was also on the cards. It was equally plain that the enforcement team got carried away in the number of penalty notices it issued.
I secured a reduction in the fines to £8,000 and helped the company bring its HR procedures up to scratch to avoid repeat offences. I then worked with it on its working time arrangements so it complied with the National Minimum Wage. The HMRC inspection never materialised though a Health & Safety inspector did turn up, but that’s another story.
