All employers will, at some stage, have to deal with a grievance from an employee who complains that they are being bullied.
Although such grievances are fairly common, employers seem to lack confidence in dealing with them.
Remember to take the time to listen to the employee and try to avoid a knee jerk defence of the employee who has been accused of bullying. Often in these situations a sympathetic ear will go a long way.
Consider alternative outcomes, rather than simply upholding or rejecting the grievance. Sometimes a mediated “clear the air” meeting will help all the parties to understand what is required of them going forward.
