Laura is a solicitor in the Personal Injury Team. She graduated from Cardiff University with a first class law degree and passed the Legal Practice Course with Distinction at Cardiff Law School. Whilst here Laura was awarded the Edgar Buck Prize for the best overall performance and the Blackstone Press Award for the best performance in Litigation and Advocacy for the academic year 2000/2001.
Laura started working at Trethowans in September 2001 and completed her training contract with the firm in 2003. She is experienced in dealing with Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence claims.
Laura undertakes a wide range of Personal Injury claims including occupier's liability, public liability, accidents involving animals, product liability claims, road traffic accidents and accidents at work. She helps clients pursue dental and clinical negligence claims against Hospital Trusts and medical professionals including dentists, chiropractors and General Practitioners. She acts on behalf of both adults and children and has acted on behalf of clients who do not have the mental capacity to pursue their own claim by taking instructions from someone else, usually a close relative.
Examples of how Laura has helped clients include:
- Laura successfully concluded a Personal Injury claim for a polish client who spoke very little English. The client was involved in an accident at work and suffered a soft tissue injury to his knee and a fracture to his heel bone. She was able to take the client's instructions and act for him by meeting him with an interpreter outside of the office and he recovered £15,500 in damages from his former employer.
- Laura acted for a horse riding instructor who had suffered an open fracture to his tibia and fibula after being kicked by a horse that was being ridden alongside him by one of his fellow instructors. She obtained evidence from an equestrian expert who was of the opinion that the instructor could and should have ridden the horse, that was known to have an aggressive temperament, in a different manner in order to avoid the accident and her client recovered £10,000 in damages.
- She represented a client who was the victim of a practical joke when his work colleague pulled a chair out from under him as he went to sit down at work. Laura's client suffered a severe injury to his back which meant that he was unable to return to the employment he held and had enjoyed at the time of the accident and had to take alternative employment. Her client successfully recovered a sum of £72,500 from his former employer.
- A former client wrote to Laura after his claim was concluded and said "In a world of little thanks, I felt compelled to write about my good experience with Trethowans solicitors. The level of service I received was nothing short of exceptional. I was offered professional advice at every step of the way and I am of course very pleased with the final outcome. My personal thanks to Laura Vaughan and her colleagues at Trethowans".
