The sister of Dr W, Mrs L, asked Roz Wyeth for assistance when her brother died apparently without having made a Will.
Dr W’s assets were substantial and an Inheritance Tax liability arose on his death. Roz was able to guide Mrs L through the administration of Dr W’s estate, arrange for searches to be carried out to determine that Dr W had not made a Will with an unknown solicitor and ultimately to obtain probate.
Mrs L was worried about the liability to Inheritance Tax as Letters of Administration could not be applied for without a proportion of this having been paid and Dr W’s bank accounts were frozen on his death. Mrs L had no available cash of her own to enable this problem to be dealt with. Roz arranged for Dr W’s bank to release money to settle the liability, made application for the Grant and arranged for a Deed of Variation to be prepared so that Mrs L could pass some of her brother’s wealth to her children without herself incurring a liability to Inheritance Tax.
