Life At Trethowans
Trethowans prides itself on being a ‘great place to work’. We recognise that investing in our people and their ambitions is the only way we can grow and provide our clients with the excellent service we are renowned for.
You’ll have access to good quality work most often associated with a City firm including household name clients such as Ladbrokes, Jewson (part of Saint Gobain Group) and Pizza Hut, whilst working alongside excellent people.
We actively encourage and support a work-life balance and want you to enjoy not only your professional life but also the benefits of working near the coast and the countryside.
Culture and Values
We pride ourselves on creating a friendly and open environment where individual differences are valued and everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
We have a good reputation in the region for our strong culture which we are very proud of and we work hard to ensure it is protected.
What else sets us apart from all the other ‘leading South Coast law firms’? Well, we consider the little things to be important, for example, ice creams on a hot summer’s day, a chocolate bar delivered to your desk with a newsletter produced by our Trainees, additional discretionary bonuses in recognition of hard work and firm performance, a rewarding afternoon off with your team to do something fun at the end of the financial year, to name but a few.
We recognise that our people are our most valuable asset and therefore our core values are;
Integrity – we value our people and recognise that integrity is paramount to the success of our firm.
Autonomy – we work together. We value people’s opinions and ideas.
Consistency – we aim to ensure there is consistency across the firm in many ways, whether that is through team procedures, IT systems or simply the way we do things.
Supportive – we are supportive of our people in a variety of ways, whether that is through financial support for further qualifications or perhaps through difficult circumstances.
Caring – we look out for each other and provide a caring environment in which there is support and encouragement to speak up.
Excellence – we value excellence in our people and through the service we provide to our clients.
Open – communication is key and we actively encourage an open and honest environment.
Teamwork – above all else we are one firm, whichever team or geographical location you are based in.

We also have a dedicated Social Committee who are responsible for organising various firm events each year including a family BBQ in the summer months, Partners vs Staff rounders match and a black tie event at Christmas.
Investing In Our People
There are excellent prospects for promotion within the Firm and our developing business provides opportunities for career advancement. Many of our Partners, Solicitors and Team Leaders are former trainees.
We recognise that our people are our most valuable asset and it is important to embrace and nurture their development. Trethowans is committed to providing satisfying and rewarding careers for all our staff and we recognise the need to provide a clear path for their career progression. We encourage all staff to be ambitious in terms of what they can achieve.
For lawyers, we are able to provide a clear structure of how you can progress from a newly qualified or FILEX lawyer through to Associate, Senior Associate and ultimately to become a Partner.
For support staff, we actively encourage their development whether that is attending regular internal training sessions or successfully attaining a paralegal or CILEX qualification.
Every individual has an annual performance development review which is a structured opportunity to discuss their performance, role, personal development and career aspirations generally. This provides an excellent basis upon which to manage the career development and training needs for every individual.
The ethos of the firm is that we work hard but we also like to unwind and get to know our colleagues outside of a work environment. There are opportunities to socialise with colleagues at both team and Firm events. Whether it is a team lunch perhaps over a webinar, a lunchtime drink near the offices or attending one of the office lunches which are organised to introduce new members of the Firm to others.
We have a dedicated Social Committee who are responsible for organising various Firm events each year including a family BBQ in the summer months, Partners vs Staff Rounders match and a black tie event at Christmas.
Getting Involved With Our Local Community
At Trethowans we work very hard to look after our clients. But we also like to take the time to get involved with our local communities and to support local causes.
Taking care of the environment
Work Experience Placements – As part of the Firm’s CSR policy we participate in organised work experience schemes to provide students from local schools experience of life in a busy law firm. We work in hand with Education Business Partnership (EBP) to arrange these placements within our Poole, Salisbury and Southampton offices.
Ensuring that each student receives valuable work experience involves commitment from a number of different people across the Firm, and therefore we currently limit our work experience placements to year 10 and 11 students from local schools via the EBP scheme. Unfortunately we are therefore unable to offer work experience opportunities to sixth form, college and university students at this time.
