Home Secretary ‘boldly pushing back the tide of migrants’

10 Jun 2011

Yesterday the government unveiled proposals which will go a long way to breaking the link between work based immigration and settlement in this country.

  • Re-brand Tier 2 as a temporary category.
  • Allow the most exceptional Tier 2 migrants to apply for settlement after 3 years.
  • Permit those who don’t qualify for settlement after 3 years to stay for another 2 years with the expectation that they’ll then leave the country.

There is a 12 week consultation period about these proposals so we expect statements from the Home Secretary in the autumn party conference about how she’s boldly pushing back the tide of migrants. The message is clear, King Canute is alive and well and living In Marsham Street, London SW1.
