Nick Gent, an experienced corporate finance lawyer from Southampton and Salisbury based law firm Trethowans has been short listed as one of only three finalists for the coveted title of Lawyer of the Year at the prestigious Solent Deals Awards.

The Solent Deals Awards 2013, which takes place at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on 6 June, is the region’s premier awards event for corporate finance deals.  The Solent Deals Awards covers deal activity between January 2012 and February 2013. All categories are always keenly contended with a wealth of corporate deals taking place in the region.

Nick Gent was shortlisted by the judging panel after they had sifted through more than 200 nominations across all categories.  The judges debated which firms and individuals had made an impact in the region’s corporate finance market in the previous 12-month period.  The winners will be unveiled at the awards event in June.

Nick is described as a 'stand-out lawyer' in Legal 500 and is ranked as a leading lawyer in Chambers in relation to Corporate and M&A work and Banking and finance work, being 'praised for his commercial outlook, with clients appreciating his ability "to simplify complex legal terminology into plain English."

In the last 12 months Nick has acted on a number of complex transactions for both listed and unlisted companies.  These have included representing:

  • The Innovation Group plc on its acquisition of Gemini Vehicle Solutions Limited;
  • the vendors on the sale of HSP Group Limited to Edgen Murray Europe Limited, a subsidiary of Edgen Murray Inc.; and
  • management in respect of the buy-out of Coolmation Limited and Climate 4Hire Limited by Swegon Limited, a subsidiary of Swegon AB.

Mike Watson, Head of the Corporate and Commercial Team at Trethowans, commenting on Nick being shortlisted said "I am delighted that Nick has been recognised by those across the industry for the quality, complexity and diversity of the corporate finance work he has been undertaking.  Nick is a key member of our growing Corporate team, which is now comprised of four partners alongside four additional lawyers.  All four of the partners in the teams are ranked by Chambers, the independent guide to the legal profession, which is a rare accolade.  We have grown our client base as well as our team over the last year and are now recognised as one of the strongest corporate teams in the region. We will be cheering Nick on at the Awards dinner in June!”
