What is asbestos disease?

Related diseases (most typically pleural thickening, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma) are caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust. Each disease can take decades to develop symptoms, which often include breathlessness, a dry cough, wheezing, fatigue, and finger clubbing. The final outcome depends on the type of disease diagnosed. Our solicitors specialise in every type of asbestos claim – make an online enquiry today.

Despite being banned in the UK in 1999, it continues to have life-long impacts on those who have been exposed. Most commonly, related conditions affect those who worked within the construction, ship building/repair and manufacturing industries between the 1930s and 1970s. A wide cross section of working people were exposed in this period, including:

  • Shipwrights and shipbuilders
  • Boilermakers
  • Plumbers
  • Fitters
  • Electricians
  • Carpenters
  • Asbestos strippers

It was also used extensively in schools, hospitals and other workplaces, which means a whole range of people were exposed to asbestos dust over the years. If you suspect you have an asbestos related disease, we suggest you make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

Can I get compensation for asbestos exposure?

Even if the employer no longer exists it is still possible to pursue a claim by tracing the insurers on risk at the time you were exposed. A claim for compensation can also be made for a family member who has died of a related disease; this would normally have to be done within three years of their death, although there are exceptions to this rule.
