James Hammersley is the team leader of the Poole Private Client team. James has been advising clients on a wide range of issues for over 10 years and undertakes all areas of Private Client work including estate administration, setting up trusts, trust administration, inheritance and capital gains tax planning, the preparation of wills, powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications.
James has experience in dealing with complicated estate administration matters and complex applications to the Court of Protection. James works closely with the Agricultural and Rural Property team when an administration involves farming assets to achieve the best solution for the client and beneficiaries.
James has been recognised as a key contact by Legal 500 (2017) and is currently studying towards his ATT (Associated Tax Technician) qualification which will benefit his clients with his expertise in this area.

Case Study
James has assisted in varying a Will for a client who has inherited but was going to pass it on to his children by way of gift. The client did not know he could vary the deceased’s Will, potentially saving him Inheritance tax in the future. James had a very limited time in which to achieve this.
James has successfully obtained Agricultural Property Relief for numerous of his clients.
James has assisted in amending a personal application to HMRC where the client had submitted the information incorrectly on an IHT return, which resulted in a significant sum of inheritance tax being paid back to the estate.
James has successfully obtained Personal Welfare deputy appointments and a retirement and appointment of an incapacitated trustee.
James has assisted in creating trusts in Wills to ring fence the estate where there has been a second marriage so the respective children from each side of the family will get their parents share of the assets in the future.
Away from the office
James lives with his wife and two children in Christchurch. He enjoys travelling and learning about different cultures. James is an active participant in all sports and is particularly keen on swimming. He is currently trying to get to get grips with CrossFit.
