I am a Partner and the Head of Personal Injury. I qualified as a Solicitor in 1994, and have spent my entire career working for Claimants in complex personal injury compensation claims, first as a Solicitor and Partner in a large trade union law firm, and then with Trethowans for the past four years. I have specialised in asbestos work since 1997 and am the co-ordinator for the Southern group of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and a member of the APIL Occupational Disease Special Interest Group.
I am a Recommended Lawyer in the Legal 500 2021 guide which notes: ‘Serious personal injury matters are overseen by John Hall, who covers the spectrum of catastrophic matters with a speciality in asbestos work.’

Case Study
I acted for the widow of a self-employed builder who, at the start of his career, in the late 1960s, spent two years working with asbestos sheets in a wood mill on the Sussex coast. The case came to me just before the three year time within which cases have to be issued. I did all the work necessary and issued proceedings in the Royal Courts of Justice asbestos list. I was able to settle the case before trial for a significant six figure sum.
In another case, I obtained a large sum of compensation for a client who developed asbestos lung cancer whilst working as an apprentice shipwright aboard ships undergoing refit and repair at HM Dockyard, Portsmouth.
I acted for a client, now living in Spain, who developed mesothelioma after working for his father, a building sub-contractor, for several years in the 1960s. He was exposed to asbestos in boiler rooms at a college in Winchester. After an extensive investigation, I was able to identify the relevant insurers, who paid my client a significant six figure sum of compensation within five months of the start of the case.
What others say
“Mr. Hall has at all times conducted himself professionally, whilst also showing an unusual aptitude of being able to put himself in the position of his clients. Clients that have lost loved ones due to the lack of duty of care shown by their relatives’ employees. He has at all times been sympathetic and empathetic to the situation that I have personally found myself to be in. He has always treated me as an individual and made me feel that he deeply cared about my situation. I inherited the claim for my father’s untimely death die to the fact that my mother died; something that I never expected. Mr. Hall recognised this and dealt with me in a very sympathetic manner; something that he has my absolute gratitude for. He made an extremely painful situation just a little more bearable. Mr. Hall has in my opinion gone above and beyond his own duty of care when handling my father’s case and my own personal set of circumstances. I am not a person who heaps praise where it is not warranted; but it is most definitely warranted here.” – Client
“I am writing to thank you for the outstanding work you did for me. You were superbly efficient and professional. I would like to say how impressed I was with the high standard of service you provided and with the level of compensation you have managed to secure for me. I would have no hesitation in recommending your services to others.” – Client
Away from the office
When away from the office, I enjoy bringing up my family by the sea. We are all members of our local sailing club where we sail our dinghy, Blue Meanie. I continue to hack around local golf courses with friends on Sunday mornings, and particularly love literature and the arts.
