Karen heads up Trethowans’ Licensing Team. She has over 25 years of specialist licensing experience and can help with all types of premises licensing.

Karen is responsible for managing the licensing requirements of some of the country’s favourite national restaurant chains. This includes all new premises licence applications throughout England and Wales as well as changes to existing premises such as amending the layout and/or operational requirements; DPS variations; payment of annual fees and applications by staff for their personal licences.  As a result, Karen is familiar with licensing policies nationwide and enjoys good relations with the licensing authorities.

The last couple of years have seen a huge increase by operators in creating outdoor dining areas. Karen is proficient in applying for pavement/tables and chairs licences, enabling her client’s guests to enjoy the British sunshine when it makes an appearance.

Karen is a Recommended Lawyer in the Legal 500 2022 guide and an Associate to Watch in Chambers.

Notable work highlights

  • Advising on, and submitting multiple applications for pavement licences, via the Business & Planning Act 2020.
  • Numerous successful applications for new premises licences nationwide, many located within cumulative impact areas, all granted in acceptable terms for client’s style of operation.
  • Advised and assisted national client on the licensing of their prestigious new site in a Conservation Area.
  • Involved in obtaining first premises licence in this country for a famous US burger chain when it set up business in the UK.
