Trethowans handles £3.85m sale of Grade I-listed property

Trethowans has acted in the £3.85m sale of a historic Grade I-listed property called Holme Hall, which stands in more than four acres of grounds and was used as a filming location in the BBC’s Jane Eyre television series.

Built in the 1600s on the banks of the River Wye near Bakewell in Derbyshire, this beautiful private home was meticulously restored by its former owners, John and Ekaterina Stansfield, who purchased it in 2009.

They decided to move abroad and listed the property with a local estate agent, Cauldwell & Co, which quickly found a buyer and appointed Trethowans to handle the sale.

Halina Mitchell, partner and head of the firm’s Southampton residential property team, said: “We have an excellent working relationship with Cauldwell & Co and have worked with them on many other transactions. That said, Holme Hall is a unique, high-end and extremely luxurious property, so we were delighted to be appointed.

“Grade I-listed homes are very rare, accounting for just 2.5% of the UK’s property market. Buying and selling them involves satisfying a variety of truly unique and sometimes complicated legal enquiries, which proved challenging at times.

“However, I am pleased to say we built great rapport with Mr and Mrs Stansfield and liaised with the buyer’s solicitors to complete the transaction, which I personally enjoyed working on very much.”

The sale of Holme Hall, which also included a wide range of antique fixtures and fittings and several neighbouring fields, completed on 31 August 2022.
