The Charity Commission has published a range of useful guidance over the last couple of months. Some of which include:
The Commission have reported on statistics presented regarding the skills, experience and demographics of trustees in England and Wales.
The Charity Commission has updated its trustee recruitment guidance, offering practical steps to help charities attract more candidates. Key recommendations include conducting a skills audit, keeping role descriptions updated and distinguishing between essential and learnable skills. It also suggests using social media, trustee finder services and free resources to broaden outreach, while acknowledging that paid recruitment services remain an option.
The guidance clarifies the rules on paying charity trustees, distinguishing between payments and expenses. While trustee roles are usually voluntary, some charities may offer compensation, requiring strict legal compliance. It outlines key regulations, risks and steps for updating governing documents, while emphasising the importance of reimbursing legitimate expenses to remove financial barriers to participation.

A statutory investigation is underway into multiple charities regarding the management of £22 million in funds, with evidence showing that issued cheques are being converted into cash. To prevent further issues, the regulator has imposed an immediate temporary restriction requiring approval before issuing any cheques.
