Putting Children First: How to Make Separation Easier for Families
This year’s Good Divorce Week (10-14 November) focuses on Putting Children First, a national campaign by Resolution, encouraging parents to reduce conflict during separation and prioritise their children’s emotional wellbeing.
As Resolution members, Trethowans’ family lawyers are committed to helping families find constructive ways to move forward. We understand that while separation is often unavoidable, conflict doesn’t have to be.
Why it matters
Children are remarkably resilient when they feel loved and supported by both parents. It’s not divorce itself that causes long-term harm, but the level of tension children experience. Minimising conflict and providing consistency can make all the difference.
A constructive approach
Our family lawyers are trained to help parents reach agreement without unnecessary confrontation. Options such as mediation and collaborative law can promote cooperation and ensure children’s needs remain at the heart of every decision.
How parents can help
– Keep communication calm and consistent.
– Reassure children that both parents love them and that they are not to blame.
– Avoid discussing disagreements in front of children.
– Seek early legal advice from a Resolution-trained solicitor.
Our commitment
At Trethowans, we believe there’s a better way to separate, one that puts children first and helps families look to the future with confidence.
