Today, 5 September 2025, marks the International Day of Charity, a day dedicated to promoting charitable efforts and recognising the power of giving. Established by the United Nations in 2012, this day commemorates the life and legacy of Mother Teresa, whose work for the poor and vulnerable earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, with the core objective of sensitising and mobilising individuals and organisations around the world to support and help others through volunteering and philanthropy

The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death, symbolising her kindness as well as the lasting impact of helping others.

In the UK alone, the charity sector is vast and diverse, comprising over 170,000 registered charities, supported by almost 7 million volunteers and over 900,000 trustees. These organisations range from small community groups to internationally recognised institutions, all united by a shared mission to help others. For trustees, volunteers and charity professionals, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the legal frameworks and governance structures that enable charities to thrive and deliver meaningful change.

Kirsteen Hook, Charities Partner at Trethowans comments: “Charity is about people,  compassion, community and the drive to make a difference. On this day, we celebrate the incredible work of those who give their time, energy and resources to help others. It’s a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can have a lasting impact.”

The day invites us all – individuals, professionals, and organisations – to reflect on how we can contribute to a more compassionate and equitable world. Whether through volunteering, donating, advocating, or strengthening the legal and operational foundations of charitable work, each action can play a part in building a society rooted in kindness and understanding.
