Flexi-job apprenticeship pilot scheme
What’s happening?
On 6 April 2022, the Apprenticeships (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2022 will come into force.
The Regulations will enable a pilot scheme of “flexi-job” apprenticeships in England. This will reduce the minimum term of an apprenticeship from 12 months to 3 months.
Why is this important?
It is hoped that the national skills shortage can be plugged, at least in part, by apprentices. However, the need for varied and flexible working patterns, particularly where work is short-term or project based, means that the minimum 12-month term can put off employers.
The “flexi-job” apprenticeship scheme will allow certain employers to take on flexi-job apprentices for a minimum period of 3-months (instead of the usual 12-months). This means flexi-job apprentices can undertake their full 12-month apprenticeship in blocks of 3-months with the same or different employers, whilst still receiving their relevant training.
The pilot scheme will begin in April 2022 and is intended to last for 18 – 24 months. A key point to note is that, at present, the pilot scheme will only be available to certain approved apprenticeship standards in the creative and construction industries. However, this may be extended.
What should you do?
- The Government has confirmed that it will release guidance ahead of the pilot start date. Keep an eye out for our future updates as we will let you know when the guidance has been released and what you need to do next (such as preparing or amending apprenticeship agreements).
- In the meantime, review the approved apprenticeship standards in the Regulations and consider whether your business is eligible to participate in the “flexi-job” apprenticeship scheme.
