Employment Alert – EU Settlement Scheme deadline
The EU Settlement Scheme deadline comes into force on 30 June 2021.
What’s happening?
The deadline for applying under the EU Settlement Scheme is today – 30 June 2021.
Why is this important?
Free movement rights ended on 31 December 2020. EEA/Swiss nationals who were resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 were then given 6 months in which to apply to continue working and living in the UK (known as ‘settled status’ or ‘pre-settled status’ as applicable). This 6-month period ends tomorrow on 30 June 2021. Therefore, if an individual fails to apply for settled status or pre-settled status by the deadline, they could lose the right to live and work in the UK. It is illegal for an employer to employ an individual who does not have such rights and so action would need to be taken.
What should you do?
Make sure all relevant staff have applied by the deadline, otherwise they may not have the right to continue to work and live in the UK.
